The Painted Turtle seeks experienced VOLUNTEER pediatric registered nurses who seek to make a difference in the lives of children with chronic and life-threatening illness at camp during Fall 2009 and Spring 2010. Volunteer nurses will work under the direction of The Painted Turtle Nursing Director. Nurses will be responsible for administering care related to the various medical condition groups served during our family weekend camp sessions, including: liver transplant, arthritis and other rheumatic conditions, kidney disease and transplant, asthma and allergies, skeletal dysplasia, spina bifida, and inflammatory bowel disease. Responsibilities include: preparation and administration of medications and treatments to campers and staff, providing various levels of first aid, sharing in rotating acute care clinic coverage with physician support, assisting with clinic inventory as necessary, being involved in educating staff and camper families, and serving as a role model in regard to children’s growth and development issues, health care, hygiene, and ADL needs surrounding acute and chronic illness.

Volunteer commitments for our 3-day Family Weekend Camp sessions start between 12 p.m. - 1 p.m. on the Friday of the family weekend and run through 2:30 p.m. the following Sunday. Volunteers may volunteer for as many camp sessions as they wish. Please see our camp calendar at www.thepaintedturtle.org for a list of the specific camp sessions for fall 2009 (our spring family weekend schedule has not yet been released).

Housing and meals are provided on site (for volunteer nurse only - we are unable to house the families and children of our nursing staff).

Qualified candidates will have a minimum of 1-2 years pediatric nursing experience, State of California Registered Nursing License, and current CPR/first aid certification. PALS certification preferred. Flexibility, teamwork, good communication, strong organizational skills and excellent people skills are essential.
