Waitemata District Health Board serves the communities of North and West Auckland and the Rodney District, a population of nearly 500,000. Dedicated to the delivery of public health care, Waitemata is committed to "making a healthy difference" to the patient, their family/Whanau, the community and Iwi, and the healthcare workforce.
We have a position for a Consultant in Psychiatry Older Age (POA). The Service covers an area of New Zealand with one of the highest (and fastest growing) populations of Older Adults over the age of 65, the Hibiscus Coast. We will consider Consultants in POA and Fellows wishing to train in POA.
There is flexibility within the permanent Consultant role that could include time on Kingsley Mortimer Ward (a 17-bed Older Adult Mental Health Inpatient Unit on the North Shore Hospital campus), consultation to the Geriatric Medical Wards, time with one of our 3 Community Teams and an afternoon in Memory Clinic.
The Team is part of a well-established and growing POA service at Waitemata District Health Board - currently we employ a total of 8 Consultants. A separate POA on call roster is in existence. We are an accredited training service and have rotating pre-examination Psychiatric Trainees and Advanced Trainees in POA.
The Service currently has 17 inpatient beds co-located with Geriatric Medicine Inpatient Wards and 3 Community teams working in West Auckland, the Urban North Shore and Rodney North District (a more rural area). There is a new community service currently under development that will offer intensive care for Older Adults with psychotic or mood disorders.
The service operates a clinical governance model that allows close involvement of Clinicians in service development, service planning and quality improvement initiatives. There is also a strong and well established relationship with the WDHB Health of Older People Services and a Specialised Services for Older Adults (a combination of Psychiatry of Old Age, Geriatric Medicine and Needs Assessment) is currently being developed. There are opportunities to be involved with joint initiatives across services.
Teaching and supervision of Training Registrars, junior doctors/students and clinical leadership to the multidisciplinary team are core functions for our Consultants.
You will be committed to providing a high standard of care and clinical leadership, and enjoy working in a multidisciplinary team. You will have a strong consumer focus and enjoy the challenges of providing services to a diverse community.
If you would like to join us to lead the way forward for mental health services in New Zealand, either now or in the future, we would be delighted to hear from you.
