The Small Animal Medicine Section provides high quality medical care and treatment to patients seen in the FHSA. In addition, this section creates a positive learning experience for TCSVM students and student technicians with regard to small animal medicine, and supports the training of Small Animal Medicine technicians.

In conjunction with the Small Animal Medicine First Shift Sr. Veterinary Technician (SVT), the Small Animal Medicine evening and overnight SVT is responsible for assisting the Hospital Administration and Medicine Section Head in directing the daily function and smooth operation of the Small Animal Hospital Medicine Section. This position ensures that high quality technical assistance will be provided to the Medicine Service patients, clients, clinicians, residents, interns, and students. Technical duties include providing high quality nursing care to patients with varying degrees of illness in each of the small animal medicine wards including the isolation and exotics wards.

 

Duties also include teaching and assisting veterinary students and veterinary technician students in correct technical procedures, ensuring that support staff stays abreast of new techniques and are capable and qualified to train veterinary students, and the promotion of high quality service to customers.

This position may work in conjunction with ECC Sr. Technicians to ensure and provide assistance to each other as needed. The SA Medicine SVT provides assistance to veterinarians and students with regards to inpatient and outpatient treatments and procedures, technician appointments/discharges and special procedures.

Administrative duties include coordination and scheduling of adequate technical staff to meet the needs of the service and provide high quality patient care always. In cooperation with the First Shift Small Animal Medicine SVT, this position recommends changes and makes proposals for cost-saving improvements which will enhance the production and operation of the Small Animal Medicine Service. Both SVT’s will promote, facilitate, and develop a team spirit and productive workforce among the Medicine Service technicians. This position is a supervisory partnership requiring frequent, clear communication with the Small Animal Medicine First Shift SVT, the Veterinary Technician Manager and the Medicine Section Head.

Basic requirements: High School Diploma or equivalent with 3 years in veterinary medicine including some supervisory experience. CVT required. Familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel, and ability to learn Hospital Accounting System (HAS) and the Hospital’s electronic medical records system (FIRST). Ability to lift 50 lbs.

Preferred Qualifications: Associates or Bachelors degree in Veterinary Technology. Veterinary Technician Specialty (VTS) Internal Medicine earned or eligible ideal. Previous experience in a veterinary teaching hospital or specialty practice, previous supervisory experience (3 or more years) and human resource management skills, including excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
