Quality Lab Technician

The Quality Lab Technician is responsible for the quality analytical inspection and testing of incoming materials experimental and final product; recording and analysis of test data; test rationalization and upgrades; assisting in the development of new test methods, work instructions and procedures; clear, concise and prompt communication of any issues; instrument calibration/verification; internal ISO9000 audits; and to also support the production team when necessary. Employees holding a Quality Technician position must be proficient in all Quality Lab tools and testing methods. Technique in performing multiple testing on all Quality Lab tools is well-developed (attention to detail and accuracy) and cross-functional. Technicians may also be asked to guide and assist in the training of team members in the lab.
The key responsibilities of the Quality Lab Technician are:
65% - Inspection, Testing, Calibration – Experiences and fully qualified to perform all activities related to both the analytical and physical inspection and testing of raw materials and finished products, with a focus on the analytical testing requirements.
· Inspect incoming raw materials
· Perform analytical (and physical property, when required) on finished products, research and development experimental products, and customer complaint samples. Focus of testing is Analytical, which includes ICP, HPLC and multiple particle sizing. Will also be required to perform physical property testing, such as pH, viscosity, specific gravity on a rotational basis.
· Uses judgement to recognize and address deviations from standards, equipment calibration, etc. in order to assure high degree of consistency in tests and equipment
· Verify and calibrate all test equipment per manufacturing recommendations, ASTMs and Cabot test methods.
· Troubleshoot complex customer testing requirements to achieve resolution
· Capable to troubleshoot basic to complex maintenance on at least one major tool
15% - Data Entry and Reporting - All activities related to recording and running advanced reports related to inspection and test results in accordance with all quality and ISO requirements. Utilizes thorough understanding and application of SPC, SQC and control charting techniques.
· Enter all control standard data into Quality Analyst Database and all testing data into Sample Manager and Prism Business System
· Create reports and charts from test data.
· Analyze data for trends and other quality issues that may appear.
· Applies judgement in decision making when communicating any trends quality issues that appear through testing to appropriate personnel.
· Communicate test results through certificates of analysis and contribute data/analysis to monthly metrics and monthly quality reports
10% Test Rationalization and Development of New Test Methods – Actively participate and contribute in the development and writing of new test methods and the corresponding work instructions and procedures documentation required by ISO. Also, active participation and input into and optimization of test methods through tracking of test data and analysis of SPC, SQC, other trend charting, look for ways to rationalize and optimize current testing and through networking with R&D and other QA/QC functions, continually look for ways to upgrade testing methodology.
5% - Safety and Housekeeping – Takes a leadership role in meeting and exceeding activities related to all safety, health and environmental guidelines and policies. These activities include but are not limited to:
· Adhering to all SH&E guidelines and policies within the Company and maintaining personal safety within the workplace.
· Maintaining a safe and clean working environment, upholding a world-class standard of housekeeping.
· Sample management
· Completing all required safety training on time and participating in safety activities i.e. safety audits, housekeeping etc.
5% - Other Duties as Assigned
Required Qualifications:
Technical – Demonstration of technical knowledge to add value to Quality Lab operations; Strong mathematics skills; Experience with SPC, SQC and basic statistical methods; Ability to work with basic laboratory measurement equipment; Experience with analytical equipment; Hands-on experience and analytical abilities. Extensive experience with HPLC and/or ICP technologies is a strong plus.

Computer - Intermediate, experience with statistical software packages a plus (i.e. Quality Analyst); Basic data entry and spreadsheet development
Education – Bachelors degree in a technical discipline (i.e. Chemistry, Biology, etc.)
.Experience – Relevant quality laboratory experience a plus
