The Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care Section provides high quality medical care to critical and emergent patients. In addition, this service creates a positive learning experience for TCSVM students and house staff with regard to Small Animal ECC medicine and also supports the training of specialized ECC technicians.
The Assistant Supervisor is responsible for:
- Assisting the Emergency and Critical Care Senior Veterinary Technicians, the Hospital Administration and the ECC Section Head in directing the daily function/smooth operation of the SAH/ECC section with responsibility for both the emergency service/emergency room and ICU.
- Helping to support the ECC Section Head’s vision and goals for the service by ensuring/providing high quality technical support to our critical care patients, clients, clinicians, residents, interns, and students;
- Promoting excellence with regard to both internal and external customer service by coordinating procedures;
- Providing outstanding patient care;
- Facilitating clear communication and acting as a resource for students, staff, residents and interns.
Technical duties include:
- Caring for critical and emergent patients;
- Providing technical support to ECC clinicians;
- Teaching and assisting veterinary students in correct technical procedures;
- Helping to train support staff;
- Ensuring the ECC technicians stay abreast of new techniques and are well qualified to train veterinary students;
- Monitoring and ensuring appropriate charging for the section’s patients and procedures;
- Working with the Senior Technicians in coordinating/scheduling technical staff to meet the needs of the service concerning routine, critical, and emergency cases;
- Assisting with developing a positive team spirit and productive work force;
- Recommending changes/suggesting proposals for cost saving improvements to enhance the quality production and operation of the department;
- Assuming full supervisory responsibility for the section may be required in the absence of a Sr. Technician.
Basic Requirements: A High School Diploma or the equivalent with minimum of 3 years practice experience at a paraprofessional level. CVT required. Familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel, ability to use the Hospital Accounting System (HAS) and the Hospital´s computerized patient record system (FIRST). Ability to lift 50 lbs.
Preferred Qualifications: Thorough knowledge of veterinary emergency/critical care medicine. Previous supervisory experience. Willingness to obtain VTS certification strongly preferred. Strong technical ability, patient assessment skills and animal handling/restraint of a variety of species. Demonstrated excellent interpersonal/communication/problem solving skills to assist in supervising the technical staff and teaching veterinary students, interns and residents. Acts as a role model for technical staff by maintaining professionalism and committing to on-going career development and skill building. Able to function in a professional manner in a fast paced, often stressful environment, while prioritizing responsibilities and providing exceptional patient care. Functions well as part of a team as well as independently. Able to prevent and resolve conflicts in a professional and effective manner.
